Spokane, Washington, located near the Rocky Mountain foothills, is the county seat of Spokane County, Washington. When the United States government complied its demographic data courtesy of the 2010 census, it discovered that the city had a population just under 209,000, making it the second-largest city in the state of Washington, after Seattle.
Thousands of years ago, hunter-gatherers were the first inhabitants of the area that is now Spokane. The city received its name from members of the Spokane Native American Tribe, with the word “Spokane” meaning “children of the sun.” The land around the city was effectively westernized by American and British explorers with the signing of the Treaty of 1818. 62 years later, Fort Spokane was created by the U.S. Army.
As of 2010, Spokane’s population was approximately 87% white, 2% African-American, 2% Native American, 3% Asian and 5% Hispanic or Latino. It’s metropolitan area includes Stevens and Pend Oreille counties. Notable employers include the State of Washington, Spokane Public Schools, Spokane County and Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and Children’s Hospital.
Prominent neighborhoods in Spokane include Emerson-Garfield, Corbin Park, Five Mile Prairie, Hillyard, Logan, University District (featuring students affiliated with Gonzaga, Washington State University and the University of Washington), Minnehaha, Nevada/Lidgerwood and North Hill, among many others. Popular parks include Riverfront Park, Manito Park and Botanical Gardens, Mount Spokane State Park, Dishman Hills Conservation Area, John A. Finch Arboretum, Saint Michael’s Mission State Park and Riverside Park.
In terms of art and culture, Spokane is home to the Knitting Factory, Fox Theater, Bing Crosby Theater, INB Performing Arts Center and the Spokane Civic Theatre. The city also boasts the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, and each year the city hosts the Lilac Festival, honoring youth and military members.
